Abstract
She reserved for herself the full right to her life

I am incredibly interested in people and as the result of that I gather experience, so to say, in their place, for usually they do not know themsleves what is it that is happening with them, which – as a bystander – I see plainly. (5 IX 1928)

Stanisława Przybyszewska was a Polish playwright and painter from the prewar period, known for her rigorous approach to artistic research. Her key area of focus  was the history of the French Revolution and the artist has spent a significant amount of time studying it in depth. Each page of her works was meticulously written and rewritten from 4 up to 10 times until she felt what she had written was up to par. Known for her work ethic, which bordered on insanity, she worked for 18 hours a day, rejecting all comfort in life (food, warmth, good health) in favour of losing herself in her own projects. Due to extreme poverty she had lived in, the manuscripts she left are scarce, but the remaining few might be compared to the printed volumes of her plays. Despite the challenges she has faced, she remained faithful to the vision she had, and was able to produce two true works of art for the price of her own life. As a result of existence such as this, her portfolio gained one more artwork – that of her own existence, crafted and polished until it no longer resembled a human life.

The lecture will present Stanisława Przybyszewska to the broader public, focusing on her style of work, depicting the setbacks and challenges she had to face while researching and writing.
