Abstract
Interdisciplinarity in the study of works of art, based on research in wooden churches in south of Poland.
Paintings in the wooden churches in southern Poland are an integral part of the architectural structure of those temples. During conservation works, one should focus on the entire polychrome area, including its structural layer, which is wood. Each correct conservation requires numerous technological and technical studies of the painting in order to select appropriate approach as well as binders and pigments used during conservation. Paintings also represent the historical value of the building. Determination of their prominence or dating itself may often be difficult due to missing chronicles or documents. A thorough archival query and physico-chemical examination of the painting can allow to identify the artist or the circle from which she/he came. Interdisciplinary research conducted by physicists, chemists, art historians and art restorers made it possible to determine layers of paintings in the St. Michael the Archangel church in Ropa and date and find the supposed artist from the St. John the Baptist and St. Barbara church in Ulanów.
